Kihuen Statement on Growing Bipartisan Effort to Protect DREAMers

Washington, DC — Today, Congressman-elect Ruben Kihuen released the following statement on a growing bipartisan effort in Congress to pass legislation that would give young undocumented immigrants legal status:

“For too long we’ve seen extreme ideology in Washington get in the way of a simple reality: protecting undocumented immigrants from deportation and keeping families together honors our American tradition and strengthens our economy. My family immigrated to this country from Mexico when I was just 8 years old, and we’re only here today because of immigration reform signed by President Reagan in 1986. While I continue to believe we need comprehensive immigration reform that addresses all aspects of this issue, I am pleased to see that some Republicans and Democrats are already beginning to lay the groundwork for a bipartisan legislative solution to protect DREAMers and I look forward to working with them in the new Congress. It would be unconscionable for a new Administration to turn against the thousands of young men and women who already came forward seeking deferred action. These immigrants have so much to offer our state and our country, and granting them legal status will benefit all of us by bringing them into the fold of our economy and our society.”
