Ruben Kihuen is a progressive champion who has delivered real results for Nevadans. He is dedicated to ensuring every Nevadan has a fair shot at the American Dream.
Born in Mexico, Ruben and his family immigrated to the United States in search of a better life. Ruben draws inspiration from their hard work as field laborers and maids, remembering the many other families who have shared in the same immigrant experience.
He worked his way through college and he was inspired to “pay it forward” by working with other college students at College of Southern Nevada for over 10 years, ensuring they had a path to a good career. After volunteering his time working to elect hard working Democrats like U.S. Senator Harry Reid, at the age of 25, Ruben entered the political arena himself and defeated a well-funded incumbent for a seat in the State Assembly.
After serving two terms in the State Assembly, Ruben ran for the State Senate, becoming one of the youngest state senators in modern Nevada history. He went on to found the Nevada Hispanic Legislative Caucus, bringing six other legislators on board and helping Nevada’s Hispanics receive better representation at the Nevada Legislature.
Delivering Progressive Results
Ruben is the only Democrat for Congress who successfully fought back against the Republican Majority in Carson City.
Investing in our Children
Ruben helped work toward a solution to fully fund K-12 education in Nevada by passing the largest investment for our schools in the 2015 legislative session. The budget, among other things, will allow for the expansion of free all day kindergarten for every school in Nevada.
Ruben authored and passed the Silver State Opportunity Plan, creating the first ever grants for low-income students wishing to attending college in Nevada. In the first year, the program has already helped nearly 700 students achieve their dream of attending college.
Equal Pay for Equal Work
Ruben sponsored legislation to crack down on employers with wages that unfairly hurt women. He even sponsored a joint resolution to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment.
Raising the Minimum Wage
Ruben fought back against reckless Republican efforts to tie a minimum wage increase to the elimination of overtime pay. He also championed a bill to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour.
